Happy, happy birthday
Gabriela turned 22 on Tuesday, so Edwin (who has a blog now, too!) took us to the Marriott, one of his favorite spots to nighttime on Zamalek. The hotel is gorgeous and ornate, especially after dusk, when strands of tiny lights illuminate its outdoor restaurant. The space is open to anyone, so we filed in to order some peach, mint and strawberry tobacco and smoke via shisha: a traditional glass water-pipe ingrained deep-seated in Egyptian culture. Yesterday, we walked down the narrow streets of Islamic Cairo, and every other shop sold shisha exclusively. They are constantly smoldering here, which is starting to make me sick, actually.
But it was great the other night!
